Ángeles Nieto, Madrid, (1963) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. Her 2nd study after completing a Master in Art History at the “Universidad Complutense” in Madrid. In the year of her graduation (1993) she was nominated for the Academy Prize. A year later, in 1994, she was named “Talent of the Year” in Amsterdam. In Pulchri Studio in The Hague she received the honorary prize of the “Javaanse Jongens Graphic Award”. This was followed by beautiful publications in leading magazines such as “Art View” and “Blad”.
Ángeles draws with wire. In her own characteristic style she creates sculptures from drawings. These have a very unique style where animals, human figures or objects convey thoughts of freedom, flying, energy and movement. The strength of her bulls, the concept of some of the images, the symbolism, takes us into a world full of deep and emotional content. They are representations between the dreamy and the real.
Her inspiration in nature, her travels, people and the southern determine the language. Ángeles creates the work as a game, a conversation between what has been drawn and what has yet to be drawn, always looking for balance. With hatching, effects of depth, spaces appear. They are areas of light and shadow that follow the laws of the visual language. The materiality of wire gives the work a palpably different dimension.
Ángeles Nieto’s wire works continue to amaze with their modernity and sensitivity, as a representative work of the current artistic time.
Since 2021 she has been a lecturer at the Graphic Media Institute, Amsterdam, and since 2017 she has been a guest lecturer at the Maastricht Academy of Media Design and Technology.
